Prime Minister Vladimir Putin holds a meeting on the situation around the nuclear power plant in Japan

Even the worst-case scenario at Japan's nuclear power plants poses no threat to Russia's Far East. This was the main conclusion reached by conference participants. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin nonetheless ordered a review of the current condition, future plans and development prospects for Russia's nuclear industry. He also proposed accelerating oil and gas projects in the Far East to increase supplies to Japan.

“United Russia should value every mandate it receives from voters to help solve people’s problems,” said Vladimir Putin at the meeting. He also noted that “the best election strategy for a leading political party is to get things done.”

At the meeting, Vladimir Putin raised the issue of Russian-Belarusian trade and economic relations, in addition to other fields of successful cooperation. The two leaders then discussed the impact of recent world crises, particularly in Japan.

Vladimir Putin spoke about the consolidation of assets of KamAZ and MAZ, two major car manufacturers. According to him, “the establishment of such a strategic alliance will naturally increase the competitiveness of Belarusian and Russian enterprises and create new stable, high-paying jobs”.

“Bilateral trade increased by almost 20% last year, and if we remain as active as we have, it will exceed the pre-crisis level very soon,” Mr Putin said as he was opening the meeting.
