Prime Minister Vladimir Putin chairs a meeting in Nizhny Novgorod to discuss the future of the petrochemical industry

In his introductory remarks, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin outlined several challenges for the petrochemical industry. First, he suggested creating a national centre for chemical technology at a leading Russian chemistry university. Second, he highlighted the need to manufacture high-tech materials for housing and road construction and other industries. Third, he noted that a competitive petrochemical industry needs new, durable processing facilities, and that infrastructure limitations and administrative barriers must be overcome in order to create these facilities.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin meets with Samara Region Governor Vladimir Artyakov

The governor reported to the prime minister on the growth of economic indicators associated primarily with state aid to AvtoVAZ. “AvtoVAZ may end 2010 with a profit,” said Mr Artyakov. Mr Putin also asked about unemployment in the region (the governor reported that it had been halved) and about the measures used in overcoming the fires and drought. According to Mr Artyakov, the region lost 50% of its harvest and needs help with feed grain.

Vladimir Putin instructed the head of Rosreyestr to expedite registration of new housing for victims of the fires. “Work is in progress at many construction sites, so the issue of housing registration will come up. We need to organise this work in an appropriate manner,” Mr Putin said.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin discusses the provision of medical care for the victims of the terrorist attack in Vladikavkaz with Deputy Minister of Healthcare and Social Development Vladimir Belov

During the meeting Vladimir Belov told Prime Minister Putin about medical treatment given to the victims of the terrorist attack in Vladikavkaz, including those who have been transferred to hospitals in Moscow. The prime minister requested that a video-linkup be established as soon as possible with the multi-profile centre in Beslan, where victims of the attack are also being treated, and that the relatives of any injured people who have been moved to Moscow for treatment be given help finding accommodation. Mr Belov reported that 11 people are now being treated in Moscow hospitals but said that the number of people asking for help could grow.

The government is providing substantial support to the nanotech industry in order to boost output to 900 billion roubles by 2015. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signed a government resolution today that establishes the guidelines for issuing government guarantees for loans taken out by RusNano until 2015.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin meets with former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori

Political and economic relations between the two countries dominated the meeting’s agenda. Mr Putin said Russia could see a high potential for the development of trade relations with Japan, notably in the energy sector. Mr Mori, for his part, thanked Mr Putin for the invitation to visit Russia and expressed his condolences over the loss of life in this week’s terror attack in Vladikavkaz.
