According to the Russian prime minister, the 50-year extension of the Finnish lease of the Russian part of the Saimaa Canal demonstrates the special nature of the relations between the two countries: “It demonstrates our confidence in each other and our desire to cooperate in the long-term, historic perspective.”

“Russian-Finnish relations provide very good bearings for many other European countries as they form relations with the Russian Federation… It is certainly a factor of European stability,” the Russian Prime Minister said during a joint news conference.
