Plans for reconstruction of housing destroyed by wildfires were reviewed during the meeting. Construction is on schedule, Viktor Basargin said. There are 97 construction projects currently under development.

The discussion focussed on impact that the drought across central Russia was having on the country’s water resources. Marina Selivyorstova said that despite the difficult water resources situation “no limits have been placed on water usage, or on the guaranteed water supply”. Water reserves are several times bigger than the regions’ demand for water and work continues on improving the reliability of drinking water supply to businesses and the population.

The governor told Mr Putin that industrial output in the region had grown by an estimated 19% from last year and that the unemployment rate had been decreasing. On the other hand, there is still 11-18 million roubles to be paid in wage arrears, which is about one-tenth of the peak amount. Mr Zelenin described the Tver Region’s current economic performance as “quite optimistic,” but said mechanical engineering was lagging behind somewhat.
