Prime Minister Vladimir Putin held a meeting with Minister of Telecommunications and Mass Media Igor Shchegolev

Mr Putin and Mr Shchegolev discussed the latest 11th World Congress of the Russian Press in Lucerne, Switzerland, as well as preparations toward digitising Russian television.

Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov chaired a meeting of the Government Commission on Transport and Communications

During the meeting, Mr Ivanov spoke in favour of reforming long-haul passenger train services, in particular because of their low profitability.

During his tour of the Novgorod Region, Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov conducted a meeting on the development of the agro-industrial complex in Veliky Novgorod

Viktor Zubkov believes that investors are still interested in agriculture because in the last few years the Government and the regional authorities have rendered substantial assistance to the agro-industrial complex. He said that recently the Government adopted a resolution to assist investors, agricultural companies and farmers to resolve housing problems in the countryside. The state will subsidize mortgage loans for agriculture workers, he specified.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin met with Margaret Chan, Director General of the World Health Organisation

“Our relations with the World Health Organisation have been developing for a long time and very successfully. We support all of the WHO initiatives and efforts in the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other socially dangerous diseases. We consider it extremely important to jointly combat alcoholism, smoking, and other habits that have a direct negative effect on people’s health.”
