Vladimir Putin chaired a meeting of the Government’s Council on Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship

"Efforts to streamline the sphere of competition are called on to improve Russian economic patterns, to facilitate the more effective performance of its sectors and separate enterprises, to provide substantial incentives for reducing outlays and improving the quality of our goods and services and developing small and medium businesses."

Production based on high technologies and knowledge-based economy should account for at least 20% of the country’s GDP by 2020, Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said at a meeting of scientists and teachers/lecturers

“This is an ambitious goal,” he said. “However, we plan to attain it by increasing R&D expenditures to 3% of GDP in 2020 from 1.12% in 2007, and also by dramatically increasing the results attained by fundamental and applied research and design projects.”

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s visit to St. Petersburg

On November 25 Prime Minister Vladimir Putin visited the Torfyanovka international transport crossing point on the Russian-Finnish border in the Leningrad Region and addressed the State Border Commission in St Petersburg. Prime Minister also visited the Vyborg Shipyard and had meetings with St Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko and with Leningrad Region’s Governor Valery Serdyukov.

Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov held the Russian side’s meeting of the Russian-Indian Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological, and Cultural Cooperation

The commission discussed preparations for its session in New Delhi, India on December 3, 2008. This session will focus on implementing a task set at top level – to increase bilateral trade to $10 billion by 2010.

First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov chaired a meeting on support of Russian retail networks

The meeting analysed the market situation, discussed various aspects of implementing the decisions taken at earlier government meetings. It also discussed steps to improve and monitor the sector.
