Prime Minister Vladimir Putin met with State Duma deputies from A Just Russia party

"Now we are facing new tasks. It is necessary to develop children's healthcare and pre-school education. The birth rate has gone up, and we do not have enough kindergartens. We should introduce new, higher standards for the production of food, and consider methods for protecting the younger generation from smoking, alcoholism, and drug addiction."

Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov held a meeting of the Government Commission on High Technology and Innovation

Mr Ivanov said that a centre was needed to coordinate operations in the area of high biomedical technologies.

Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Government Staff Sergei Sobyanin told the annual meeting of state secretaries of federal agencies that the Government was preparing over 80 draft laws for submission to the Parliament

Mr Sobyanin said that the Government would need to make serious efforts to implement the concept of long-term development through 2020 and the main directions for Government policy through 2012.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin met in Sochi with representatives of the Russian and French business communities

"I should emphasise that there has been a strong foundation created to foster our business partnership; an effective cooperative structure has been formed; and that commodity turnover is on the rise. Measured at the end of the second half of 2008, the accumulated volume of direct investments from France equalled $1.7 billion. We endorse French investment in the Russian economy."

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin made a speech at the opening of the 13th head-of-government meeting of the French-Russian Commission for Cooperation

"More and more new French companies that come to the Russian market have long-term investment plans. Alstom, Alcatel, VINCI and many other French companies invest not only in the projects of the Moscow Region, but, as we have just heard at the meeting with businessmen, in many regions of Russian Federation."
