Prime Minister Vladimir Putin visits the TNK-BP Tyumen Oil Research Centre
26 february 2010
During his visit, Mr Putin inspected the centre's collection of core samples from oil-filled geological formations being studied and developed by TNK-BP.
Specialists explained to Mr Putin how they use core samples to determine the composition and presence of oil in wells. Core samples provide almost 70% of the information required for oil exploration and production.
Mr Putin also met with young specialists working in oil exploration and production projects and inspected the equipment that allows them to carry out studies for vertical and horizontal drilling.
Upon learning that TNK-BP orders sophisticated horizontal-drilling equipment from foreign producers, Mr Putin advised TNK-BP Executive Director German Khan "to order more from Russian industrial companies" and maybe "set up joint ventures with other firms."
