Dmitry Medvedev visits the West Siberian Metallurgical Plant in Novokuznetsk during his working trip to the Kemerovo Region

The West Siberian Metallurgical Plant (ZSMZ) produces iron and steel and was launched in 1964.

In the mid-1980s, the plant embraced a unique technology of steel casting without using unprocessed iron – a new achievement in global metallurgy. Shortly after the patent was issued, several foreign countries purchased licences to use the new method.

On June 30, 1983, ZSMZ received the status of an integrated works. In late November 1992, ZSMZ became an open joint stock company.

Since Dec. 31, 2001, ZSMZ has been under the EVRAZ GROUP's control.

In June 2005, EVRAZ ZSMK became the first Russian metallurgical plant to receive the ISO 14001:2004 environmental certificate.

In 2008, EVRAZ ZSMK was the first Russian metallurgical plant to adopt an integrated management system under ISO 9001 (quality management system), ISO 14001 (environmental management system) and OHSAS 18001 (health and safety management system) international standards.

On July 1, 2011, the EVRAZ United West Siberian Metallurgical Integrated Works was formed. It comprises ZSMK and the Novokuznetsky Metallurgical Integrated Works (NMK).

EVRAZ ZSMK is among the top five Russian steel mills and among the top 30 global steel mills. It sells its products in Russia and other post-Soviet countries, and exports steel to 30 foreign countries. It is a general rail supplier for Russian Railways. It accounts for nearly 70% of total Russian rail production.

EVRAZ ZSMK has a construction rolled metal platform (earlier – ZSMK) and a rail roll platform (earlier – NMK).

The construction rolled metal platform covers over 3,000 hectares in Novokuznetsk in the Kemerovo Region. This metallurgic facility uses classic technologies – pig iron production from iron ore, steel production using the oxygen-converter method, and rolled metal product production using mills or stock materials through continuous casting. All phases of the technological process are monitored to ensure high quality steel production and rolling stock.

The platform specialises in producing long products from simple types of ordinary-quality steel or low-alloy steel – mostly fittings and solid rods, as well as shape steel-rolled stock, such as equal angles, beams, and channel bars – continuous cast and hot-rolled slabs, and continuous cast and hot-rolled billets.

The rail rolling platform is one of the largest rail product producers in Russia and the world. It produces rails for railways, trams and metros.

The platform includes an arc-furnace plant with two continuous casting machines, a rail and beam shop, a bar iron shop and a sheet mill shop.

In recent years, the platform started to make new types of rails – extra-strong rails, low temperature rails, and high-speed track rails. Testing has proved that the Novokuznetsk rail quality is second to none. The integrated factory uses a unique defect detection technology, including three testing stages and ensuring compliance with international quality standards.

Since 2009, EVRAZ has been implementing a large-scale investment project on rail and beam shop reconstruction. In October 2010, the integrated factory became the first Russian producer of 25-meter railway rails of a principally new quality after completing the first stage of upgrading the rail and beam shop. It is presently implementing the second stage of upgrading. After its completion, EVRAZ ZSMK will start to produce 100-meter differentiated thermo-strengthened rails at level with the world's best producers.

The range of metal products includes over 100 shapes and sizes of rolled metal products sold on the market. In addition to rails, the platform produces considerable stocks of sheeting and sectional iron.

In 2012, EVRAZ ZSMK produced 5.7 million tonnes of pig iron, 7.3 million tonnes of steel and 6.3 million tonnes of rolled metal.

EVRAZ ZSMK maintains high product quality meeting consumer demands. The integrated factory uses an integrated management system certified by Bureau Veritas.

EVRAZ ZSMK is a two-time winner of the Government Award for Quality.
