The Memorial to Soviet Veterans of Foreign Wars was opened on 23 February 1978 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Soviet Armed Forces. The choice of location in the suburbs of Havana is not accidental – 68 Soviet soldiers and officers who were killed or died on Cuban territory are buried there.

An eternal flame is located near the central wall of the memorial.
