Dmitry Medvedev speaks at the award ceremony for the 2011 Government prizes in science and technology
Government prizes in science and technology have been annually awarded since 1995.
The 40 annual 1-million-rouble prizes were established for achievements in science and technology, including 10 awards for accomplishments in defence and national security.
Seven 500,000-rouble prizes are also presented to young researchers in science and technology.
The prizes are awarded for outstanding achievements in research and development of new techniques, methods, equipment and materials, leading to their practical implementation in the following areas:
a) manufacturing industry;
b) prospecting, extraction and processing of mineral resources;
c) agriculture; storage and processing of agricultural produce;
d) medical science and healthcare;
e) construction, architecture and social infrastructure;
f) ecology and environmental protection;
g) intensification of real economy;
h) defence and national security; materiel development.
The prizes are awarded upon governmental executive orders following proposals from the Interdepartmental Council on Government Prizes in Science and Technology.
The award payout is certified with a diploma and a commemorative badge.
Nominations are made by the state authorities and public organisations following public discussion.
Joint nominations can be made for no more than 10 candidates.
The prize amount is then divided equally among the laureates, with each person also receiving an individual diploma and a commemorative badge.
In 2011, 431 laureates were awarded Government prizes in science and technology.
All awarded prizes comply with the state’s science and technology priorities. After being recommended by the Interdepartmental Council, they were selected by secret ballot, following a two-stage contest and broad public discussion.
The winning works are positively impacting many sectors of the Russian economy today, such as medical science and healthcare, energy production, chemistry, mining, oil and gas production, construction, agriculture, the light industry, IT, mechanical engineering and transport, and, to a great extent, in the areas of defence and national security.
