Dmitry Medvedev visits Moscow State Institute of Humanities and Economics for students with disabilities

The Moscow State University of Humanities and Economics (hereinafter the University) was established on October 11, 1990 by Resolution No 1011 of the USSR Council of Ministers.

Professor and Doctor of Sociology Vagif Bairamov has been serving as the University's rector since 2006.

The University offers inclusive education for students with locomotor disabilities, providing them with a barrier-free environment. Order No 2356, issued on May 24, 2004 by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, granted the University the status of a leading federal educational and training centre for people with locomotor disorders.

The University offers 14 specialist and bachelor's programmes: the theory and practice of translation, law, economics, applied mathematics and computer studies, publishing, psychology, teaching, journalism, computer and IT studies, applied mathematics, linguistics, sociology and management.

The University offers five postgraduate programmes: labour economics; social philosophy; theory and history of law and statehood, and history of legal doctrines; social structure, institutes and processes; and political institutes, processes and technologies.

The Russian Ministry of Education and Sciences is currently considering the opening of a council for defence of doctoral and candidate theses at the University.

The first class, made up of 50 students, began their studies at the University in 1993. The University currently has 980 students, including 482 students with disabilities studying full-time, 59 of which are wheelchair users.

In 2007, part-time education programmes featuring distance education technologies were offered to students. At the moment, 110 students with disabilities are provided with distance education.

The University's teaching staff comprises 101 individuals, with 17 doctors of science and 63 PhDs.

Since 1990, over 1,000 people with disabilities have graduated from the University, with 60% of them currently holding permanent jobs.

The collection of the University's scientific library includes over 46,000 textbooks, works of scientific and technical literature and fiction. The reading room is equipped with six terminals that provide Internet access.

The University has 229 Internet terminals, over 150 personal computers set up as a local area network, six computer classrooms equipped with multimedia projectors and interactive whiteboards.

The University's campus comprises an academic building with classrooms, administrative and educational departments, research laboratories, a scientific library with a reading room, computer classrooms, a gym, gym facility for people with disabilities, cafeterias and a hostel.

A hostel for 450 students with a unit for physical and psychological rehabilitation is being built as part of the Housing Federal Targeted Programme.

In 2011, vocational schools in Volgograd, Chelyabinsk and Elista were included in the University, following Order No 2140 of July15, 2011 of the Ministry of Education and Science. Since 2012, a barrier-free environment for people with locomotor disorders has been created.

Disabled and parentless students from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Ukraine and Tajikistan study at the University as part of an international cooperation programme.
