Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev tours the Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Station during a working visit to the Voronezh Region

A workers' settlement, Novogresovsky, which was later renamed Novovoronezhsky, was founded in 1957 under a project to build one of the first Soviet atomic power stations. The city status was conferred on Novovoronezhsky in March 1987.

Novovoronezh is located on the left bank of the Don River 50 kilometres south of Voronezh. As of early 2012, its population was 32,100.

Owned by the Rosenergoatom Concern, the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is the city-forming enterprise employing 19% of the city's economically active population. There are also five businesses that form a technological chain with the power plant, three food industry enterprises and five construction businesses.
