Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev meets with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych while on a working visit to Kiev

“We are focused on the comprehensive development of strategic cooperation with Ukraine as our closest neighbour and partner. For a variety of reasons, we simply have no grounds for reviewing our strategic priorities,” the prime minister said during the meeting.

Born July 9, 1950 in Yenakievo, Donetsk Region.

Education:

Yenakievo Mining Vocational School (1973); Donetsk Polytechnic Institute (1980), Major in Mechanical Engineering; Ukrainian Academy of Foreign Trade, Department of International Law.

Experience:

Worked as director of the Ordzhonikidzugol trucking company, deputy general director and general director of Donbasstransremont, general director of the Ukrugolpromtrans industrial transport company in the coal industry, and general director of the Donetskavtotrans regional motor transport company. September 1996-May 1997 – First Deputy Chairman of the Donetsk Regional Administration.

May 1999- May 2001 – Chairman of the Donetsk Regional Council.

May 2001-November 2002 – Chairman of the Donetsk Regional Administration.

November 2002-January 2005 – Prime minster.

Ran for president in 2004.

Headed Party of Regions since 2005.

Aug. 4, 2006-Dec. 18, 2007 – Prime minister.

2007 - Became Head of the Party of Regions faction in the Verkhovna Rada.

2010 - Elected president and assumed office on Feb. 25, 2010.

Married, with two sons.
