Prime Minister Vladimir Putin visits Baltiysky Zavod during his trip to St Petersburg

Founded in 1856, Baltiysky Zavod is favourably located on Vasilyevsky Island in the mouth of the Bolshaya Neva River in western St Petersburg. The shipyard has two building berths and a covered slipway. Its 350-meter-long berth, the biggest in Russia, allows it to build ships with a deadweight capacity of up to 100,000 tonnes.

BZ is a leading national shipyard and Russia's sole producer of bronze and latten brass propeller screws, weighing as much as 70 tonnes and measuring up to eight meters across. The company specialises in cargo superships and icebreakers, both nuclear and diesel. It has built more icebreakers than any other shipyard in the world, including the 50 Years of Victory, the world's biggest nuclear icebreaker. The company has the necessary infrastructure and test facilities for nuclear power plants.

Currently BZ is marketing some of its promising R&D, including liquefied gas supertankers, multi-role supply icebreakers, ship-based atomic and diesel power plants, technical support ships for shelf operations, and ship-based distillation installations.

The company produces a wide range of nautical power equipment and machines both for its own consumption and on contract for other shipyards, as well as heat-exchange equipment for nuclear power stations and non-ferrous and steel castings.

The BZ quality control system has been certified as meeting international standards. The company is pursuing promising new business avenues and adopting modern production methods, including CALS technology, which builds an electronic model of a ship and provides continuous information support throughout its lifecycle.

BZ employs approximately 3,000 people.
