First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov meets with Kazakh First Deputy Prime Minister Umirzak Shukeyev

The two officials discussed cooperation in agriculture and the automotive industry.

First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov said that in the near future Russia and Kazakhstan planned to pursue a common agriculture policy, establish joint agricultural panels overseen by the appropriate ministers from the two countries and develop forecasts for production and consumption of meat products. The deputy prime ministers charged the agricultural ministries of Russia and Kazakhstan with overseeing the first meeting of the joint agricultural panel.

First Deputy Prime Minister Umirzak Shukeyev stressed that Kazakhstan planned to increase beef exports to Russia to 60,000 tons within the next three years. Kazakh beef will comply with international standards and Russian phytosanitary requirements. Russia currently imports a total of 1.7 million tons of beef.

Representatives of the two countries also discussed Russia's automotive exports to Kazakhstan and the possibility of building a joint automotive factory in Kazakhstan. Experts presented a preliminary business plan that addressed issues such as financing and government support.

The deputy prime ministers stated that such a joint venture could help diversify their countries' industry, as well as develop and expand their industrial expertise. They emphasized that the jointly run manufacturing plant would utilise Russian technology.
