Prime Minister Vladimir Putin meets with Latvian President Valdis Zatlers

Participants:
Mr Putin expressed his belief that the Russian and Latvian business communities were interested in expanded cooperation and that government agencies needed only to support this strong mutual interest.

Transcript of the beginning of the meeting:

Vladimir Putin: Mr President, I am pleased to see you. It is high time that we resume diplomatic contact and restore our trade and economic relations after the collapse caused by the hardships our countries have faced, particularly Latvia.
I believe that recent developments have shown that we need to move forward together and re-establish traditional economic ties, especially because members of the business community have shown great interest in this. Government agencies need only support this strong mutual interest.

Valdis Zatlers: Mr Putin, thank you for taking the time to meet. I agree that the business communities in our countries want to see improved trade relations. The intergovernmental commission has been very effective, but more importantly, we must establish regular high-level contacts such as this meeting. I am pleased to meet with you here, in Helsinki.

Vladimir Putin: Thank you.
