Prime Minister Vladimir Putin met with his Moldovan counterpart Vladimir Filat

Participants:

Transcript of the beginning of the meeting:

Vladimir Putin: Good afternoon, Mr Filat. I am very glad to have this opportunity to meet with you.

The political situation in Moldova has been turbulent. But people still have to live, and it is necessary to ensure that politics do not interfere with the life of ordinary people, and instead open up new opportunities.

Relations between Russia and Moldova have developed extensively in the last few years. Trade between our two countries is significant, which has affected many aspects of our economy and its development.

On the way here I was told how our bilateral relations have been developing over the last few days. I am very pleased to have this opportunity to meet with you and discuss our bilateral contacts.

Vladimir Filat: Mr Putin, the pragmatism that has become apparent as we have been discussing the issues in which out two countries cooperate is very important for me, my Government and our entire country.

I would like to now state publicly what I have already told you: the Republic of Moldova will pursue its policies openly and pragmatically. We will uphold all the commitments that we have assumed or will assume. We are counting on your assistance.

I would like to use this opportunity to ask you to complete the talks on granting a loan to Moldova. I have discussed this issue with Mr Kudrin in Chisinau. We have also discussed possible agreements with the IMF, and we have technically progressed beyond this stage. This assistance would be very important for Moldova. Our country is undergoing a very difficult period because of the global crisis and the current domestic political situation.
