Prime Minister Vladimir Putin participated in an awards ceremony for the winners of contests held during the Year of the Russian Language in China

Participants:

Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Putin noted that the Year of the Russian Language in China "showed that interest in the Russian language and Russian culture in China is growing."

"Today's ceremony is attended by experts on Russian culture and the Russian language; this would have been regarded as especially pertinent in the past, and it is of specific value today, at the new stage of our relations," Prime Minister Putin emphasised, adding that "representatives of various generations have shown interest in Russian culture, and it is gratifying that young people participated in the contest for the best Russian song performance."

Prime Minister Putin thanked the Chinese leadership for "creating a benevolent atmosphere" for the study of the Russian language and culture. "All the efforts of the governments of Russia and China would have been in vain but for enthusiastic and passionate people like you," the Prime Minister said addressing the winners.

He invited them to Russia next year, when the Year of the Chinese Language in the Russian Federation will be held.

At the end of the ceremony, the Prime Minister presented a souvenir and a medal to Wen Jiabao, the Chinese Prime Minister.
