Press release. Meeting of the Russian Government's Defence Industry Commission

On September 9, 2009, the Russian Government's Defence Industry Commission held a meeting chaired by its First Deputy Chairman, Vladislav Putilin.

The commission considered the current status and development prospects of radio-electronic warfare, which is a defence industry priority.

The recent experience of local wars and armed conflicts shows that the role of radio-electronic warfare is growing; it is becoming the most effective means of degrading or neutralising the enemy's command and gaining superiority by destroying the enemy's command information and telecom systems.

The participants discussed the key issues of the industry and planned measures to further develop production facilities and design advanced and effective radio-electronic warfare support systems.

The commission heard reports of the Defence Ministry and the Russian Technologies State Corporation on the progress in implementing earlier decisions with regard to development of thermal imaging devices.

The commission members had a very constructive discussion of the problems facing the optical equipment industry, which provides a foundation for weapons engineering. Optronic devices and systems largely determine any weapon's and military equipment's combat effectiveness. Development and manufacturing of such systems involve achievements of fundamental and applied science, materials engineering and cutting-edge technologies.

Following the discussion, the commission planned measures which would give an additional impetus to integration processes and development of new projects in the optronic industry.
