First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov chaired a meeting of the Government Commission on Sustained Economic Development of Russia

The Commission stressed the need for the regional authorities to restructure the network of public institutions, cut administrative costs and take robust measures to create conditions for continued production activities at all levels.

The meeting discussed the social and economic situation in the regions and the state of the industrial sector. It also discussed measures to make the decisions on improving the situation in the real economy more effective and to expedite their implementation.

Also discussed were measures to ensure balanced budgets of the Russian regions, social support for the vulnerable social strata, re-employment of laid-off workers as well as state support for small and medium enterprises. The heads of the Russian regions have called for an additional discussion of ways to facilitate access to credits for the real economy, notably the creation of economically sound conditions for lending to enterprises.

The meeting also stressed the importance of using all the forms and methods of supporting small and medium enterprises, including tax policy and easing of administrative pressure. Issues connected with stimulating consumer demand and placing the state order were also discussed.
