Igor Shuvalov on a working visit to Baikonur

During the visit, First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov and Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Kairat Kelimbetov held a meeting of the Russian-Kazakh intergovernmental commission on the Baikonur Space Centre. The meeting agenda included issues related to the development of a road map for sharing Baikonur and drafting a new intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in using the complex.  Issues related to Baikonur’s general development were also discussed.

After the meeting, Mr Shuvalov, answered reporters' questions and said that the schedule of launches from Baikonur in 2014-2015 will be determined before September 1, 2013, and that the schedule for this year has already been approved.

Regarding the development of the adjacent city’s social infrastructure, Mr Shuvalov said that there are a number of problems that need to be resolved – including old housing and the lack of modern pre-schools. He said that Kazakhstan is willing to consider financing the infrastructure and social facilities based on certain programmes. He also proposed giving local residents the opportunity to purchase Baikonur housing for private ownership.
