Dmitry Medvedev wishes current and former coal mine industry employees a happy Miner’s Day
The message reads, in part:
"The operation of this key branch in the Russian economy demands from you special human and professional qualities. The energy security of the nation, the uninterrupted supply of raw materials to industrial enterprises, and heat and light in people's homes to a large extent depend on the efficient work of miners.
Today coal mining companies extract hundreds of millions of tonnes of coal, increasing labour productivity and enhancing our export potential. It is necessary that we further explore promising deposits, primarily in Siberia and the Far East.
Improving safety and social security for coal mine industry employees are among the government's top priorities. I have first-hand information that a miner's job is incredibly difficult and involves risks to his health and life. That is why it is important that miners are able to secure an adequate wage, and comfortable living conditions for them and their families.
I am confident that by preserving miners' traditions and introducing cutting-edge technologies, you will turn the miner's job into a prestigious occupation, and will cope with the challenges facing the industry."
