Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin examines latest nuclear centre projects, attends state awards ceremony during visit to the National Research Institute of Technical Physics (VNIITF) in Snezhinsk

Dmitry Rogozin visited several important facilities in the Urals nuclear industry. He was accompanied by Sergei Kiriyenko, Director General of the State Atomic Energy Corporation, Rosatom, and Chelyabinsk Region Governor Mikhail Yurevich. In particular, the deputy prime minister examined new technology for producing special products, visited the institute's computer centre and museum, and saw several projects in nuclear medicine.

He also attended a state awards ceremony at the Snezhinsk Centre for Academic and Business Contacts where he presented the state awards to eight employees of VNIITF and the Zababakhin Nuclear Centre. They were awarded for valuable contributions to the development of the national nuclear industry and national defence. During the ceremony, he said that Russian nuclear professionals had not lost their "daring" in research.

While speaking to reporters after his trip, Rogozin said Russia was protected by "a strong and reliable nuclear shield and can therefore grow in safety and security."

The deputy prime minister noted the importance of healthy competition between the teams of the two nuclear centres, in Sarov and in Snezhinsk. "Competition provides an environment for scientists to develop a product which, once commercially produced, will give Russia a prospective competitive edge in important high tech industries," he said.

Civilian applications for nuclear technology were also discussed during the visit. The deputy prime minster backed an initiative to set up a nuclear medicine centre in Snezhinsk.
