"A terrible tragedy has occurred. Ninety-six people lost their lives in this plane crash, including the president of Poland, Mr Lech Kaczynski. This is, of course, primarily a tragedy for Poland, for the Polish people, but it is our tragedy too.

"The government commission set up in Moscow will do everything it can in this difficult time to help and support the relatives of the deceased, who are already arriving in the Russian capital.
