The message sent to the scientist’s family:
Olga, Alexander, Andrei and Nikolai,
Please accept my heartfelt condolences over the death of Mr Gury Marchuk.
He fought in the Great Patriotic War, and after the war he dedicated his life to science and became a talented mathematician. As one of the developers of the hydrogen bomb, he made a real contribution to the country’s security. His work formed the foundation of the research school and found wide practical use in hydrometeorology, immunology and medicine.
Mr Marchuk was also greatly respected as an administrator. As Chairman of the USSR State Committee for Science and Technology and as President of the USSR Academy of Sciences, he did much to develop the academy and improve its international reputation.
His memory will be cherished forever by his relatives, colleagues and many followers.
