Sent to the Writers' Union of Moscow, the message reads, in part:
"Russia has lost an outstanding writer and citizen and an acknowledged classic of modern literature. A veteran of the Great Patriotic War, he wrote about his own experiences. It is for this reason that the military theme is so prominent in his works, which emotionally move millions of people and teach compassion and kindness.
"Boris Vasilyev is no more. But this talented man has left a rich creative heritage and a sweet, cherished memory. I am sure that his books will find a response in readers' hearts for years to come."
