Born on November 15, 1951 in Perm. 

1973: graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Railway Engineers.

Worked in his speciality at enterprises in Gatchina, Leningrad Region.

1975: joined bodies of state security.

Served as operative and leading personnel in the counter-intelligence subdivisions of the USSR KGB Directorate for the Leningrad Region.

2003: Head of the FSB Directorate for St Petersburg and the Leningrad Region.

February 2004: Deputy Director and Head of the Department of Economic Security of the FSB of Russia.

July, 2004: Head of the Economic Security Service of the FSB of Russia.

May 12, 2008: appointed Director of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation by a presidential decree.

General of the Army.

State awards: Order of Service to the Fatherland 3rd and 4th Class, Order of Military Merit, the Order of Honour, and six medals.

Has awards of a number of foreign countries.
