Born on February 4, 1945, in Moscow.
1962-1964: laboratory assistant at the Department of Theoretical Physics of Moscow's Lenin State Teacher Training Institute and a technician at the Moscow Electric Lamp Plant.
1964: enrolled at Moscow Power Engineering Institute and worked as engineer at the institute design bureau.
1973: graduated from Moscow Lomonosov State University.
1983: completed a post-graduate course at the Dzerzhinsky Higher School of the USSR State Security Committee (KGB).
Since 1969: served with USSR State Security Committee (KGB) divisions as engineer and Director of an R&D agency.
1993: appointed Deputy General Director of the Federal Agency for Government Communications & Information (FAPSI).
May 31, 1999: appointed General Director of the Federal Agency for Government Communications & Information (FAPSI).
From March 11, 2003: First Deputy Defence Minister of Russia and Chairman of its State Defence Order Committee.
June 8, 2008: appointed Director of the Federal Agency for Information Technology.
