Prime Minister Vladimir Putin meets with the Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance and the President of the Indian National Congress, Sonia Gandhi

While talking with Sonia Gandhi, Mr Putin noted the great role the Gandhi family had played in developing the relationship between Russia and India.

Transcript of the beginning of the meeting:

Vladimir Putin: Ms Gandhi, I am privileged to meet with you again. I am happy about our cordial relations. We continue improving the contacts between our countries.

A few hours ago I had the pleasure to meet with and talk with Ms President. After that I took part in an unusual interactive meeting with the community leaders in a business office.

All this allows me to say that our relations are improving for the benefit of our people. We have never forgotten the great role your family played to develop these relations.

Sonia Gandhi: Welcome, Mr Prime Minister. I would like to thank you and express our regards, both mine and those of the Indian National Congress. India has always considered you a close and great friend. We think that you have played a great role in expanding our relationship. And we are very grateful to you for that.

Our relations are rooted deep in history. Relations between India and Russia were established fifty years ago. We have had a very close friendship since then.

I am very happy that you have come to our country with so many delegates: you have brought industrialists and business leaders with you. We hope that this will increase our cooperation in business and that both countries will be willing to strengthen our mutual business contacts.
