Prime Minister Vladimir Putin meets with King Abdullah II of Jordan

“We all consider you one of our closest friends,” said Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, addressing King Abdullah II of Jordan. In turn, Abdullah II remarked on the excellent relations between Russia and Jordan and expressed his hope that today’s meeting would further consolidate them.

Transcript of the beginning of the meeting:

Vladimir Putin: Your Majesty, allow me to cordially welcome you to Moscow. I have just had the opportunity to introduce you to nearly all the members of the Russian government.

Let me begin by saying that we consider you one of our closest friends. We are very pleased to see you and to have this opportunity to discuss regional problems and our bilateral relations, including trade and the economic ties.

Welcome to Moscow!

Abdullah II (as translated): Thank you very much. I'm very happy to be back in Moscow and to see my dear old friend again. We value the special relationship that has been forming between Russia and Jordan. We know that you have invested heavily in deepening ties with our country over the last few years. This is why I'm so glad to be in Moscow again.

Relations between our countries are excellent, and I am pleased that today we have yet another opportunity to further consolidate them.

Historically, Russia has always been a key player in world events, including the peace process. I'm glad that today we will have an opportunity to discuss the impasse between Israel and Palestine, particularly in light of the fact that Israel has stepped up settlement activity, which has been a great disappointment to us all.

We know what big role Russia is playing in the efforts to establish a Palestinian state. I hope we will be able to discuss these issues today.

Thank you.

Vladimir Putin (in English): Thank you.
