Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov meets with President of Abkhazia Sergei Bagapsh

Transcript of the beginning of the meeting:

Sergei Ivanov: Mr Bagapsh, I would like to begin by congratulating you on your re-election as President of Abkhazia and express my hope, or rather my assurance, that Russian-Abkhazian inter-allied relations will continue to develop dynamically. I am not saying this to be witty. To my knowledge, last year Russia and Abkhazia signed 25 agreements covering all the issues on which we cooperate. Your visit to Moscow will provide another opportunity for further progress on these issues, including transport, which both Russian Transport Minister Igor Levitin and I are in charge of. Mr Levitin is also present at the meeting.

Today, we will take an important step by signing agreements in the Kremlin. But this does not mean that we have completed our work on developing infrastructure. We have more to accomplish, which I believe we will be able to discuss productively at the meeting.

Sergei Bagapsh: Thank you very much. We are pleased to be here, Mr Ivanov. I would like to thank you, Mr Levitin.

It is obvious that this is a state visit, though we have been working with the Russian Transport Ministry. You are in charge of this large sector. I completely agree with your view that transport and communication systems are the foundation for economic development. It would be unreasonable and impossible to speak of any large economic projects without considering this factor.

We have prepared several joint agreements to be signed during this visit. Most importantly, these agreements will allow us to make progress on those transport systems that are still under construction, primarily the railways and possibly the airport. Indeed, transport officials are involved in all our large projects, and I would like to thank you for that.
