The Council discussed the development of timber processing in the Volga and Urals federal districts.
"Fifteen priority investment projects worth 23.6 billion roubles ($811.3 million) are being implemented for this purpose in these federal districts," Zubkov said.
"On the whole, these projects are making significant progress," the First Deputy Prime Minister said. A timber processing plant has been commissioned in the Sverdlovsk Region in the Urals and a large-size plywood manufacturing plant has been opened in the Kirov Region in the Volga District.
Mr Zubkov also discussed the Government priority project designed to resolve issues in the Kirov Region. "We must determine the reasons for the suspension of plans to establish a timber processing plant that involved investment estimated at 11.2 billion roubles ($385 million), and also the failure to build a plywood manufacturing plant in Demyanovo on time," he said.
Participants in the meeting also discussed the efforts to implement the powers turned over to Russian regions in the timber sector.
Mr Zubkov said that all Russian regions had approved plans for supporting the timber industry, which include regulating tree farms and natural parks and maintaining timber registers. "In short, they have done a lot," the First Deputy Prime Minister said.
At the same time, he said work must continue to improve the procedure timber companies use to submit reports, promote the use of software for maintaining timber registers, and combat crime in the timber industry, most of all illegal logging.
At the end of the meeting, the Council considered a project to use low-quality timber and wood waste for the production of biofuel pellets in the Arkhangelsk Region in the north of European Russia.
