Mr Ivanov said that the export of dual-purpose equipment grew by almost one-third last year and amounted to $6.568 billion.

"A growth of 33% compared to 2007 is a good achievement," Mr Ivanov said. "Considerable effort has been taken to improve export control legislation, and changes have been made towards the improvement of interdepartmental coordination and interaction in that area."

Moreover, the Deputy Prime Minister said, "the results achieved are not a reason for complacency." He explained that the good results achieved last year were largely due to a favourable foreign economic situation.

"Now that negative trends are manifest in the global financial and economic situation, the position of many of our organisations will depend entirely on their ability to rapidly adjust to new conditions of operating in foreign markets," he said.

According to Mr Ivanov, "our main objective now is not only to preserve but also to strengthen our positions, primarily in those sectors where we can rival the leading global producers, such as the nuclear power industry and space exploration."

He added that work in those sectors should continue to focus on "ensuring the security of the country and protecting the interests of national producers."

In this regard, Mr Ivanov added that Russian enterprises should create conditions to "preclude the transfer of research-technical products of high importance for the country's defence and security abroad in violation of the established procedure."

"In fulfilling this, we should concentrate on the enterprises and organisations taking part in the implementation of the state defence order," Mr Ivanov said.
