Dmitry Medvedev inspects regional hospital during his visit to the Sakhalin Region

The Prime Minister visited the diagnostics department of a local hospital. There, head physician Yelena Stolyarova told him about hospital's work, including high-tech medical assistance. Mr Medvedev was told that the average salary of doctors is 73,000 roubles for experienced doctors, and 35-36,000 for young doctors.

Dmitry Medvedev also visited the tomograph room to see the equipment bought under a federal programme. Yelena Stolyarova says the equipment has operated for four years, with nearly 40 CT scans taken daily. "We must get the issue of tomographs under our control. This device is expensive, and necessary, so take responsibility for it," the Prime Minister instructed Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets.

"Our objective is to put things in order regarding medical education. It has degraded over recent years," Dmitry Medvedev told the doctors. The Prime Minister complained that despite the huge number of higher education institutions, the quality is often inadequate. "This is a concern not only you, but for everyone," Dmitry Medvedev said, adding that this subject is important for every person in Russia.

During the discussion, one of the doctors raised the issue of nurse and paramedic training at the hospital's college. The doctor said education tuition was the wrong approach. The head physician explained that medical students either have to pay for their education, or can get it free.

"This is the right approach, and this must be common practice in general. It is impossible to provide everything for free, and always will be. But I agree that the state must provide as many free openings as we need," Dmitry Medvedev said.
