Prime Minister Vladimir Putin meets with Nino Burdzhanadze, leader of the Democratic Movement – United Georgia party

During the meeting, Russia’s prime minister said he hoped that the unveiling ceremony for the WWII monument at the Poklonnaya Gora Memorial Park will prove a symbolic step along the journey to finding a mutually acceptable solution in the stabilisation of Russian-Georgian relations.

Transcript of the beginning of the meeting:

Vladimir Putin: I would like to say how much I appreciate the fact that you found the time and came here to see the monument being unveiled. I do hope you like it. In fact you were also involved in selecting the best design, as you remember there was a great many to choose from. I think this one really was a very good choice. I also see this as a symbolic step along our journey to finding a mutually acceptable solution in the stabilisation of our bilateral relations.

Nino Burdzhanadze: Thank you for saying that – for highlighting the importance of building stable and equitable relations between Russia and Georgia. This is very important. Of course there is indeed the hope that this monument will mark the start of the return to a process of normalisation in our relations: relations that take into account our respective interests and that will, essentially, be in the interests of both the Russian and Georgian peoples. Because of course, strained relations in no way help us to act as good neighbours or to resolve those problems and disagreements that, alas, exist within our relations.

Vladimir Putin: Absolutely.
