First Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov and Turkmenistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov co-chaired the fifth meeting of the Russian-Turkmen intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation

During the meeting, the commission members discussed priority issues of bilateral cooperation, in particular in the fuel and energy sector, power generation, science and education, agriculture, transport and military-technical spheres.

After the meeting, Russia's first deputy prime minister spoke on its results before journalists. He said:

"First, I would like to say that it was a highly productive meeting and a constructive and mutually beneficial dialogue. In a way, we made an inventory of our efforts, summing up the results of implementing the decisions and recommendations of the previous commission meeting and outlining our future objectives with due account of the agreements reached at the top level during the visit of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to Turkmenistan on October 21-22.

"We exchanged opinions on the key areas of bilateral cooperation, primarily in trade and the economy. Since the previous commission meeting, we have taken practical measures to create conditions for bolstering bilateral trade.

"The Russian-Turkmen and the Turkmen-Russian trading houses have been established in Moscow and Ashgabat, respectively, to help expand the range and volume of mutual trade.

"The Russian-Turkmen and the Turkmen-Russian business councils, established at the two countries' chambers of commerce and industry, were working actively. The Third Turkmen-Russian Economic Forum and Days of Turkmen-Russian Business Cooperation will be held at their initiative in 2011 in Ashgabat. These events will certainly facilitate the further development of bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

"Turkmenistan is currently implementing over 120 joint projects worth about $1 billion. A number of Russian companies are working successfully in Turkmenistan, in particular Power Machines, Kamaz, Itera and Mobile TeleSystems. In all, there are 138 companies with Russian capital in Turkmenistan.

"We highlighted interaction in the fuel and energy sector and agreed to act in keeping with our agreements in this sphere.

"Broader cooperation in transport is definitely strengthening our trade and economic partnership. One of the practical results of today's meeting was the signing of documents that will allow us to increase the rail and ferry link between the ports of Makhachkala and Turkmenbasy to the designed capacity.

"We are satisfied with the positive development of cooperation in science and education. In the past year, we have opened a new building of the Alexander Pushkin Turkmen-Russian School. The number of scholarships granted to Turkmenistan for enrolling its students at Russian universities has been increased from 275 to 317 in 2010. A Russian-Turkmen research and innovations forum will be held in Ashgabat in 2011 at the initiative of our countries' presidents.

"Overall, this meeting has confirmed the positive dynamics of our bilateral trade, economic and cultural cooperation. This is evidence of the huge potential we have accumulated in this sphere. I am confident that our work within the framework of the commission next year will facilitate its positive application."
