Prime Minister Vladimir Putin meets with Tajik Prime Minister Akil Akilov

Transcript of the beginning of the meeting:

Akil Akilov: Good afternoon.

Vladimir Putin: Good afternoon.

Akil Akilov: Mr Prime Minister, thank you for your hospitality, your attention, for creating the necessary conditions and for discussing some of our bilateral issues.

Our republic now finds itself in a difficult situation.

Vladimir Putin: I know.

Akil Akilov: There are external factors - Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan - and some others. I will come back to them later.

There is another problem - the exceptionally bad weather that has caused significant damage to our economy. And there are other factors, which we will discuss.

I ask you to help support my country's economy, to sustain its vital functions, and to help people affected by natural disasters. It is urgent that we rebuild damaged homes and infrastructure. For this, we need material resources and investments, among other things.

Vladimir Putin: I am also pleased to have this opportunity to discuss our bilateral relations. Some are still in the grips of the economic downturn. The global economic crisis has been hard on everyone. On top of this, Tajikistan has had to contend with natural disasters. We know this. We see it.

I am certainly ready to discuss with you how best to overcome these difficulties. I was very glad today to hear the good things you had to say about the role played by our troops stationed at the military base in Tajikistan, who extended a helping hand to the Tajik nation in a time of need, who took part in rescue efforts and rescued many.

As for economic problems, let's discuss them in greater detail.
