Prime Minister Vladimir Putin meets with President of Novoship Igor Tonkovidov

Transcript of the beginning of the meeting:

Vladimir Putin: Good afternoon, Mr Tonkovidov, I'd like to start with a few words on the recent events in the Gulf of Aden. Allow me to thank you personally and pass my gratitude on to the crew of the Moscow University oil tanker for the courage and professionalism they showed.

It really was courageous: They took action swiftly and decisively to repel an attack. It is evident that they are true professionals, making the right decision without hesitation and creating the conditions necessary for the marine combat unit to rescue the vessel. Well done!

Igor Tonkovidov: Thank you, Mr Prime Minister. I'll certainly convey your words of gratitude to them.

Vladimir Putin: How many members are there in the crew?

Igor Tonkovidov: Twenty-three. Everyone is safe and sound. The vessel is now on its way to the nearest port, where it'll refuel and replenish its supplies. We're in contact with the steamship. Everything is going as planned.

Vladimir Putin: The vessel needs a bit of repairing, doesn't it?

Igor Tonkovidov: It's no problem.

Vladimir Putin: The most important thing is that everyone is safe and sound.

Igor Tonkovidov: Yes. I'd like to use this occasion to thank the naval forces who have displayed exemplary behaviour. I'd like to thank them with all my heart.

I spoke with the ship's commander today and brought him well-wishes from the families and friends of the crew members. We developed a warm and honest friendship during this operation.

Vladimir Putin: Good. I'd like to wish all the best to the crew and the captain. Please pass this on to them. The captain performed excellently and in a very professional manner.
